It Feels Possible: How Four Diamonds Helps Families Face Childhood Cancer Daisy’s Story
When 13-year-old Daisy began experiencing severe leg pain, fatigue and frequent illnesses, cancer was the last thing on her mind.
“There’s always that little thing in the back of your head, like, ‘What if this is something bad?’” Daisy recalled. “But you don’t think it is. You think, ‘That couldn’t be me, right? Other people get cancer.’”
But it was cancer.
Daisy was diagnosed with high-risk acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL).
“That made our entire lives turn upside down in an instant,” said Daisy’s mother Heather.
For Daisy, the diagnosis meant stepping out of the world of a typical teenager and into one defined by chemotherapy, hospital visits, missed school and uncertainty. Her family would soon learn just how much childhood cancer support could mean during the long journey ahead.
“It’s hard because you just want to be a normal teen,” Daisy explained. “Your friends are doing all the normal things, and you’re thrown into this crazy world of chemo and treatments and being at the hospital all the time. You’re really sick, and mentally it’s hard and heavy.”
Facing the Long Road Ahead
Treatment for pediatric leukemia is not measured in weeks or even months.
“The treatment for leukemia is very long,” Heather explained. “She was treated for two and a half years, and it involves a lot of chemotherapy. She was on multiple types of chemotherapy, given in different ways over that entire time.”
The enormity of that journey can be overwhelming.
“They gave you a calendar for that month – just that month,” said Daisy’s father, Joel. “I think it’s partially so you don’t become overwhelmed, because if you look at the whole picture, you’re going to be blown away by the magnitude of what you’re facing.”
For families newly diagnosed with childhood cancer, the road ahead is often difficult to imagine. That’s why comprehensive care is so important. It addresses not only treating the disease, but caring for the emotional, financial and practical challenges that come with it.
A Lifeline in the First Days
Just days after Daisy’s diagnosis, her family experienced firsthand how Four Diamonds provides childhood cancer support to families facing an unimaginable diagnosis.
“Our first couple days after diagnosis, the social worker from Four Diamonds walked into our hospital room,” Heather remembered. “I will never forget how she sat down and looked at me and said, ‘You will not need to worry about any of the medical bills.’”
At that moment, Heather hadn’t even begun thinking about the financial burden ahead.
“You’re just trying to grasp the diagnosis and what it means,” she said.
But with a treatment plan involving years of chemotherapy and appointments, that burden would have become very real.
Four Diamonds immediately removed that worry.
“We had support all the time from Four Diamonds,” Heather said. “They were specifically assigned to pediatric oncology patients. They were kind, supportive and very much a part of our journey.”
That support is at the heart of the Four Diamonds mission. By covering treatment-related medical expenses not paid by insurance and providing a comprehensive network of care, eligible Four Diamonds children and their families can focus on what matters most: their health and healing.
More Than Medical Care
For Daisy, childhood cancer support meant much more than financial assistance.
“Four Diamonds means so much to me,” she said. “It was focused on keeping me healthy.”
She remembers all the ways the organization helped make cancer treatment more manageable for her and her family.
Food and gas cards were a big help. Child life specialists brought crafts and activities to brighten difficult days. Social workers offered emotional support. Resources were available when Daisy needed them most.
Those moments of comfort and joy matter, especially in an environment that can feel frightening and overwhelming.
“If you would just see the joy at the hospital, in an environment that should be so sad and hard. There’s so much joy there,” Daisy said. “From all the experiences, the crafts, all the support and care. It feels like a very positive environment.”
The Bell That Signals Hope
Throughout treatment, Daisy held onto one special milestone.
“I always knew whenever I finished chemo, I would get to ring the bell,” she said.
During her own appointments, she would hear other children celebrating the end of treatment.
“That just makes you so happy to know another person is done.”
After more than two years of chemotherapy, Daisy finally had her moment.
“Ringing the bell is very special,” Heather said. “Your medical team, the nurses, social workers, everyone comes around you. It’s a celebration because you took that last pill and your treatment is officially over.”
For Daisy, it represented the end of a long chapter and the beginning of a new one.
A Full-Circle Story of Giving Back
Long before Daisy’s diagnosis, her family already had a connection to Four Diamonds.
In 2001, Joel danced in THON® as a Penn State student, spending 46 hours on his feet to support children fighting cancer.
“Never in a million years would you think I’m going to dance in this,” Joel shared, “and then someday my family is going to be recipients of Four Diamonds support.”
Today, that connection feels deeply personal.
Now Daisy is continuing that legacy, participating in Mini-THON® at her high school. She spoke at the annual Mini-THON Leadership Summit, sharing her story with over 600 attendees – students and advisers from schools across Pennsylvania and surrounding states.
“It feels really, really good to be able to give back,” she said. “Hopefully pass on to other kids what I was able to have and know they’re going to have the same support and opportunities that made my cancer journey a little bit easier.”
For Daisy’s family, fundraising isn’t just about dollars raised. It’s about ensuring future families receive the same compassionate care, financial support and hope they experienced.
Making the Impossible Feel Possible
Every day, thanks to donor generosity and fundraising efforts like THON and Mini-THON, Four Diamonds helps children and families facing one of life’s greatest challenges.
Daisy’s message to supporters is simple and heartfelt:
“Thank you with all of my heart because you are truly saving lives.”
Daisy paused before adding, “It feels possible with the support of Four Diamonds.”
That is the power of a comprehensive approach to care. It’s financial relief. It’s emotional support and a caring community. It’s research. It’s hope in the hardest moments.
Because of donors, volunteers, THON dancers, Mini-THON participants and an extensive network of community supporters, Four Diamonds can continue providing childhood cancer support so more children like Daisy can focus on healing, dreaming and celebrating the day they ring the bell.
